What is KetoCana?
KetoCana is an exogenous ketone supplement designed to help you lose weight faster. It’s made by KetoSports and was introduced back in 2015. It’s a popular product, not least because the famous author and biohacker Tim Ferris is a self-confirmed fan.
Exogenous ketones make getting and staying in ketosis easier. They trick your body into producing more ketones so that you burn more fat, have more energy, and suffer fewer side-effects during your transition into ketosis – the so-called keto flu.
KetoCana is available in three flavors, Sweet Orange, Tangy Strawberry-Lemonade, and Creamy Vanilla. It comes in containers of 16 or 32 servings and is designed to be mixed with water. It is sugar, lactose, and dairy-free, and certified vegan-friendly. It’s also paleo-diet approved and is made from 100% natural ingredients.
How does KetoCana work?
KetoCana works best when used in conjunction with a very low-carb ketogenic diet. On keto, you reduce your carb intake to less than 50 grams of carbs per day. With no carbs to use for energy, your body is forced to use more fat for fuel. However, your brain and muscles cannot directly use fat for energy. To provide a useable source of energy, your body turns fat into a substance called ketones. Ketones are then used in place of glucose.
Supplements like KetoCana provide your body with exogenous ketones. This simply means ketones from an external source. In the short term, exogenous ketones provide your body with a viable source of energy before your body makes the switch to making its own supply of ketones. This can make the initial few days of the keto diet more comfortable.
Once you have entered ketosis, exogenous ketones can speed up fat loss by tricking your body into making even more ketones. In addition, supplements like KetoCana also act like a sort of energy drink. However, unlike most sports and energy drinks, there is no sugar to kick you out of ketosis. KetoCana is also caffeine-free. Instead, the exogenous ketones provide your body and brain with sugar and carb-free energy.
What are the Ingredients
A lot of exogenous ketone products contain a plethora of ingredients designed to help you lose weight faster. Things like medium-chain triglycerides, amino acids, green tea, and green coffee bean extract, and other exotic substances are all too common. While some of these ingredients can help you lose weight faster, many are untried and may even be ineffective.
KetoCana is a much less complicated exogenous ketone product. It contains a relatively small number of ingredients and is designed to achieve one goal – enhance ketosis. The ingredients in KetoCana are:
- Beta-hydroxybutyrate
- Calcium
- Natural flavors
- Stevia
- Citric acid
✏️ Beta-hydroxybutyrate is what makes KetoCana an exogenous ketone supplement. Proven to increase ketone production naturally, BHB is a popular ingredient in many keto diet supplements and is superior to raspberry ketones, another common ingredient.
Raspberry ketones are not actually real ketones. In contrast, BHB really does increase ketone production. KetoCana contains an impressive 11.7 grams of BHB per serving. This should provide you with a significant boost from relatively few calories.
✏️ Calcium is an essential mineral for muscle contractions. In fact, it’s such an important mineral that your body will “steal” it from your bones if you don’t eat enough. Calcium can help with fat loss. KetoCana contains 1.15 grams of fat-burning, bone-friendly calcium.
✏️ Natural flavors – when you read the ingredients list on some exogenous ketone products, you would be forgiven if you were unable to pronounce their names! A lot of these products are loaded with things like artificial flavors, preservatives, and sweeteners. In contrast, KetoCana relies on natural flavors such as fruit extracts. That’s good news if you would prefer to use a product that does not contain lots of unnecessary chemical nastiness.
✏️ Stevie – extracted from plants, stevia is a natural sugar-free sweetener. Hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, stevia won’t kick you out of ketosis and is considered to be a much healthier, safer alternative to sugar alcohols and aspartame, both of which may be harmful to your health.
✏️ Citric acid – extracted from fruits like lemons, limes, and oranges, citric acid is an antioxidant which may also increase your metabolic rate and enhance fat burning. Antioxidants help delay cell aging by decreasing oxidative damage.

How to use KetoCana properly
KetoCana is very easy to use. Simply add a scoop (supplied) to 8-12 ounces of water, stir vigorously, and drink. KetoSports recommend that to get into ketosis faster, you should use three servings per day. However, once you are in ketosis, you can use it as a pre-workout 15 minutes before exercise, or any other time that you need a sugar-free energy boost that will not disrupt ketosis.
How does it taste
One of the main drawbacks of any exogenous ketone product is the taste. Ketones naturally taste salty and bitter. To get around this problem, a lot of keto dieters prefer capsules to drinks. However, while capsules do get around the taste problem, capsule size means that the number of exogenous ketones per serving will be limited. Fewer ketones mean a less effective product.
Naturally flavored, KetoCana powder comes in three varieties, all of which are reported to taste pretty good. Don’t think for a minute that you’ll believe you are drinking Powerade, orange juice, or vanilla coke though!
Despite using natural flavorings, KetoCana still tastes like an exogenous ketone supplement, however that taste is much more pleasant than many other ketone powder drinks. As an added benefit, KetoCana mixes easily in water so you should not find yourself choking down lumps of undissolved powder.
If you still find the taste of ketones overwhelming, simply mix your scoop of KetoCana with more water to dilute it a little more. Alternatively, you could also mix with your favorite keto-friendly beverage, such as unsweetened almond milk, coconut water, unsweetened iced tea, or Gatorade Zero.
The benefits of KetoCana
The proven ingredients in KetoCana mean that it offers several valuable benefits to keto dieters. Those benefits include:
✅ Faster descent into ketosis – getting into ketosis can take anywhere between a few days to two weeks once you cut carbs from your diet. Why so long? Your body contains about 500 grams of stored carbohydrate (called glycogen) that must be depleted before you can make the switch to using ketones for fuel. The BHB exogenous ketones in KetoCana trick your body into making ketones sooner.
✅ Shorter, less severe keto flu – as you deplete your glycogen stores but are yet to fully enter ketosis, you will probably suffer a range of side effects and symptoms, often called the keto flu. Headaches, cramps, stomach upsets, brain fog, and fatigue are all common. Exogenous ketones provide your body with a viable source of fuel as you run down your glycogen levels. This can help alleviate and even prevent many of the symptoms of keto flu. Many keto dieters dread the keto flu, and KetoCana can make the whole process smoother and more comfortable.
✅ Increased energy – in normal circumstances, your body prefers to use glucose for energy. Glucose is easy to break down, and that means it provides a rapid burst of energy exactly when you need it. That’s why most sports drinks contain lots of glucose. On keto, there is no glucose available for energy, and you might not have enough ketones for things like exercise.
Using exogenous ketones means you can supply your muscles with energy at the exact time you need it. That’s why the manufacturers of KetoCana suggest drinking a serving 15 minutes before your workout.
You can also use this product to give you a boost of mental energy. Your brain normally runs on glucose but, on keto, there is none available. The good news is that ketones can cross the blood-brain barrier and provide your brain with the energy it needs to function at its best. Exogenous ketones can help increase focus, creativity, and productivity. However, unlike products that contain lots of caffeine, KetoCana will not overstimulate you or make you feel jittery or anxious.
✅ Better bone health – considering how essential calcium is for bone health, it surprising that so many people do not consume enough. KetoCana contains 115% of the recommended daily amount of this vital mineral per serving. That’s not only good news for your bones, but it’s also good for fat burning too. Low calcium diets are linked to weight gain as well as bone weakness.
✅ Low in calories – many exogenous ketone products contain lots of calories, mostly from medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTS for short. KetoCana is one of the purest exogenous ketone products around, and all of its calories come from ketones. This means it is much lower in calories. While MCTs are beneficial, they are usually best consumed as an oil and not as a dried powder. Also, even on keto, consuming too many calories could delay weight loss or even cause weight gain. KetoCana is low in calories – especially compared to some exogenous ketone products which are almost full meals in powder form.
✅ Caffeine-free – caffeine is a common ingredient in many exogenous ketone products. This makes a lot of sense because caffeine gives you energy and may also speed up your metabolism, leading to faster weight loss. However, as useful as caffeine can be, it is not always a welcome ingredient. If a supplement contains caffeine, it may make you feel anxious, and could also stop you from sleeping. But, because it’s already been added to your exogenous ketone product, you have no choice but to ingest it.
KetoCana is free from caffeine, which means you can use it late at night without having to worry about being kept awake. There is also no need to limit your coffee intake just because you are using an exogenous ketone supplement.
Side effects and drawbacks of KetoCana
KetoCana is a natural supplement, which means it should be suitable for most users. However, there are a few side effects and drawbacks that you should be aware of. These include:
❗️ Stomach upsets – all exogenous ketone products have the potential to cause gas, bloating, diarrhea, and other stomach upsets, and KetoCana is no different. However, this side effect of usually only temporary and can be avoided by reducing the size of your servings and increasing gradually after that.
❗️ High sodium content – KetoCana is quite high in sodium, containing 1.3 grams per serving. The maximum recommended daily allowance for sodium is 2.5 grams per day. Because of this, you should minimize salt in the rest of your diet to avoid consuming too much sodium, which could lead to increased blood pressure.
❗️ Taste – even though KetoCana is one of the better tasting exogenous ketone products around, some people may still find it unpleasant to drink. If you are worried about the taste, make sure you try all three varieties to find the one you tolerate best. Also, remember that you can dilute KetoCana with more water or mix it with your favorite carb-free beverages to make it taste better.
❗️ Caution: Exogenous ketone products should be avoided by pregnant women, nursing mothers, and anyone with diabetes. Diabetics often have high levels of blood glucose. Increased ketones plus high blood glucose can lead to a condition called ketoacidosis, which changes the Ph levels of the blood. This can cause serious complications. If you are in any doubt, make sure you speak to your doctor before trying KetoCana or any other exogenous ketone product.
Conclusion
Exogenous ketone products like KetoCana can make the first few days of the keto diet much more comfortable. They can help get you into ketosis faster, which will alleviate or even prevent many of the symptoms of the dreaded keto flu. In addition, the sooner you get into ketosis, the quicker you will start burning fat at an accelerated rate.
Once in ketosis, you can use KetoCana in place of your favorite sports drink. It will provide you with energy for exercise, but without caffeine or sugar. It’s also a great way to boost mental clarity – perfect for long days at work.
Because it comes in powder form, you can easily regulate the amount of KetoCana you use. That’s very useful if you experience any unwanted (but temporary) side effects and want to increase your intake gradually. This is not possible with exogenous ketones capsules.
Used by Tim Ferris, who doesn’t put his name to products that he doesn’t believe in, KetoCana is a good exogenous ketone product that is worthy of your consideration.
